Franz Schubert

One of the most famous Viennese composers and rightly so. For Franz Schubert, born as one of 20 children was only 31 years old and wrote during this time numerous songs, completed and unfinished symphonies, overtures, stage works and piano and chamber music. He received his first music lessons at the age of 5 and was accepted as a choirboy and into the imperial Konvikt in 1808. 1815 was Schubert’s most substantial year, for in addition to his work as a teacher, he wrote 2 symphonies, 2 masses, 3 operas, 1 string quartet, 4 sonatas, and over 150 songs. This is unimaginable today. Monuments to Schubert can be found in Währing, where he was initially buried next to Beethoven until they were both moved to a grave of honor at Vienna’s Central Cemetery in 1888. The house where Franz Schubert was born at Nußdorfer Straße 54 is now a museum in his memory, and another monument can be found at Parkring 10, just near our guesthouse.
